About our anesthesiology education programs

The Department of Anesthesiology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center offers an intensive postgraduate training program. Educational programs and innovative research, in the midst of an exciting clinical atmosphere, provide postgraduate trainees with unique and unparalleled opportunities. Cooperative efforts with other hospitals within the patient care services of Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center complement the department’s comprehensive approach to patient care, research and education.

Anesthesiology Residency Program

The department centers around the ACGME-accredited core residency program in anesthesiology which provides consistent and outstanding clinical training and prepares our graduates to be leaders in the field. A stimulating mix of diverse clinical training, didactic lectures and simulation experiences are provided to train residents as superb consultant anesthesiologists. Facilities include state-of-the-art operating room and non-operating room anesthetizing locations across the 1400 bed healthcare system: Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Ross Heart Hospital, James Cancer Hospital, Brain and Spine Hospital, as well as off campus sites: Eye and Ear Institute, Jameson Crane Sports Medicine Institute and Ohio State University Hospital East.

Surrounded by the multidisciplinary campus of The Ohio State University, our residency program offers additional educational opportunities across the University for our trainees, as well as the option for residents to grow as teachers themselves working with allied health professionals, medical students, and junior residents. Our department collaborates with extensive research facilities to provide an environment conducive to academic curiosity. Residents are able to engage in research varying from case reports and quality improvement projects, to clinical trials and bench research. Through these opportunities our program provides unique and unparalleled training for our residents.

Students are permitted and encouraged to customize their one-month rotation in order to gain exposure and experience in the subspecialties of their choice.

Dental Anesthesiology Residency

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center offers a CODA-accredited 36-month anesthesiology residency for dentists, which meets all the criteria for examination by the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology. Our program is unique in that, in addition to the extensive experience offered by other dental anesthesiology residencies, we offer a significant anesthesia experience for major office-based maxillofacial and cosmetic facial surgery.

This program prepares the dentist anesthesiologist to manage pain and anxiety in the most comprehensive manner for all dental/maxillofacial patients. At the conclusion of the program, the resident will be proficient in providing intubated and non-intubated general anesthesia, deep sedation and conscious sedation for diverse dental and maxillofacial surgical procedures performed on healthy and medically compromised patients, and to function in diverse patient care environments from tertiary level facilities through to private practice.

Graduates of the program are eligible for membership in the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists and the Diplomat examination by the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology.
