Residency at The Ohio State University Department of Anesthesiology offers a wide array of opportunities, both academic and personal. First and foremost, choosing Ohio State for residency ensures that you will be prepared for life after residency. Recent graduates have gone on to pursue careers in both the academic and private practice settings. For those who may be interested in pursuing a fellowship, many recent graduates have gone on to do fellowships at other renowned institutions around the country in subspecialties such as pain management, critical care, pediatric and cardiovascular anesthesia. Whatever your goal may be, completing a residency at Ohio State will get you there.
During residency, as expected, a heavy emphasis is placed on academics. Our didactic lectures occur weekly and are given by nearly every member of the department, including the program chair, to ensure both variety and completeness of the material covered. This is in addition to our Grand Rounds, which occur on Thursday mornings and are very interactive and informative. All of this, along with our daily keyword and case exposure, provides a great setting for learning, as demonstrated by our excellent board passage rate. There is no case that you will not be comfortable with upon completion of your residency.
In addition to the strong academic environment, the atmosphere is very comfortable as well. There is much camaraderie among residents and attendings. Inside and outside of the operating room, our attendings treat us as colleagues from day one. They start out as teachers, but soon become mentors and friends. It is not uncommon to see residents spending time with attendings outside of the hospital at a local happy hour, one of our social gatherings, or at the yearly golf tournament.
While we do dedicate time to our academic growth, our program also offers plenty of time to enjoy life outside of residency. Many residents have families, and more importantly, have time to spend with them. Columbus is a terrific town for residency, offering many recreational activities for both singles and families. A world-renowned zoo, multiple concert venues, great parks, Ohio State athletics (yes, we get football tickets), great shopping and night life combined with a low cost of living makes this a great place for young professionals.
Excellent academic training in an outstanding setting makes The Ohio State University an ideal place for an anesthesia residency. Please come check us out!
