Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship

About the program

The Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship is a 12-month program (July 1 – June 30) fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. One position is offered each year, and provides advanced obstetric anesthesia subspecialty training. Emphasis will include clinical sciences as well as scholarly activity. The goal is to promote the expertise necessary to deliver comprehensive perioperative care to the obstetric patient, to become involved in the acquisition of new knowledge through clinical investigation and study and to develop educational skills by supervising residents and instructing them by means of both formal and case-oriented teaching. Thus, the fellowship offers a comprehensive and diverse opportunity to train at a world-class medical center.

Application Process

Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada should hold a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Applicants must be eligible for either a training certificate or a permanent medical license as granted by the state medical board of Ohio.

Three letters of recommendation from physicians who are acquainted with your work or capabilities (prefer at least one from residency director)
Current CV with a recent photo
USMLE or COMLEX test scores
A personal statement
A personal interview in Columbus, Ohio
All candidates need to have completed an ACGME accredited residency in anesthesiology in order to be considered.

Interviews

Interviews will be conducted on The Ohio State University campus during February and March. All applicants selected for an interview will be notified via e-mail as soon as possible. We are happy to pay for one night lodging and will make your overnight reservations at either The Blackwell or Hampton Inn and Suites Columbus - Downtown, depending upon availability. Please be sure to inform us if you will require hotel reservations and if you have any special needs.

Clinical Objectives
- By the end of the training period, the subspecialist should be proficient, beyond the level of a non-obstetric anesthesiologist, in providing anesthesia care of women at various stages of risk
- Provision of neuroaxial labor analgesia using a variety of techniques
- Experience with assessment and management of patients with preexisting chronic illnesses
- Opportunity to interact in collegial and collaborative patient care efforts
- Develop the administrative skills necessary to manage the day to day operation of an obstetric anesthesia department
Research Objectives
- Participate in on-going clinical research projects
- Design and complete at least one clinical research project
- Present research results at a national conference
- Prepare a manuscript for peer-reviewed publication
Teaching Objectives
- Participate in clinical instruction of residents and medical students
- Coordinate and lead a weekly case conference
- Coordinate and lead a monthly journal club
- Present at one Department of Anesthesiology Grand Rounds
- Continuous self-education in relation to high-risk obstetric anesthesia care
Prerequisites
- Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada should hold a valid certificate from the Educational Commission of Foreign Medical Graduated (ECFMG)
- Applicants must be eligible for either a training certificate or a permanent medical license as granted by the state medical board of Ohio
- Application materials from the eligible fellowship candidates are reviewed by the program coordinator, program director and obstetric anesthesiology director
